GENERAL PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
General Public Transportation is the other transportation that Chatham Transit Network provides to Chatham County.    The Rural General Public program is funded by the NC DOT Public Transportation Division to Community Transportation programs.   Chatham Transit Network receives this money based on a formula allocation and the total amount distributed across North Carolina is determined yearly by the state legislature.   The amount of money we get to operate this program is small and we have established parameters of service to use the funds in the most cost effective and efficient manner.   This section describes in detail our general public service.    The Network does not offer “taxi service” and receives no funding that allows us to provide unlimited transportation to residents.

The Network has three different types of general public service, but the following rules apply to all three types of general public services.

General Information about General Public Transportation
Æ

Established routes will not deviate more than 2.5 miles for a general public rider.

Æ     The service hours and travel times of a route are established and can not be adjusted to accommodate a general public passenger.
Æ

The vehicle can not backtrack to make a pick-up or drop-off.   The forward progression of the vehicle can not be affected by the general public trip.
Æ     The vehicle can not wait at any stop and does not make multiple stops for passengers.   Passengers must call dispatch when ready for pick-up.
Æ     A passenger is allowed 2 “no shows”.  A verbal or written warning will be given after the first “no show” and no more pick-ups will be made after two “no shows”.   An individual can still access the transportation system by just getting on the van when one is in their vicinity, but after 2 “no shows” the Network will not return to their location for a pick-up.   See the end of this section for more information regarding the Network’s no show policy.
Æ     Children under 80 pounds or 8 years of age must have their own car seat.   The Network does not provide car seats.
Æ     Persons under 13 must be accompanied by an adult.
Æ     General public service can not replace other funding sources.
Æ     Drivers are not able to help carry packages.   Do not get more than you can carry.
Æ     All trip request must be made with the office.
